Long-term energy savings await any homeowner willing to make strategic investments. Energy savings result directly in monetary savings, allowing you to use the cash you save on more important things for your home and family.
Here are the investments you should make today to improve the efficiency of your Ventura or Santa Barbara County home:
- Upgrade HVAC equipment: New heating and cooling equipment certainly requires an up-front investment, but if your current equipment is on its last legs, and your costs to run it high, replacing it with a high-efficiency unit is sure to quickly pay for itself in energy savings over the years to come.
- Install a programmable thermostat: New HVAC equipment often comes with a high-tech programmable thermostat that allows you to program energy-saving temperature adjustments while you’re away from the home and sleeping, but you can also upgrade your thermostat at any time. After all, what’s the point of keeping your home at a comfortable temperature when it’s vacant or you’re sound asleep? Optimal savings require that you adjust the thermostat's setting for at least eight hours at a time, and set it as high or low -- depending on the season -- as you can.
- Invest in window coverings: Conventional coverings, such as blinds and drapes, add to the visual appeal of a room while providing a way to block direct sunlight from streaming in through the windows. Drapes can also be shut over windows in the winter for added insulation. You might go even further in your window-covering investment and install reflective films, exterior shutters or awnings to prevent heat gain even more. The energy savings are certainly worth the effort.
- Improve attic insulation: By separating the attic from the living space, you help keep heated air from rising and being lost in the winter. You also prevent heat from radiating down through the ceiling in the summer. Adding loose-fill insulation to the attic floor is the easiest and most cost-effective way to improve attic insulation for lower heating and cooling bills year round.
