Lower Your Summertime Cooling Costs with Both Interior and Exterior Window Treatments for Your Thousand Oaks Home
By Greg, Pacific Aire Comfort Advisor
Reducing heat gain is a proven strategy for lowering your summertime cooling costs in Thousand Oaks and throughout the entire Conejo Valley, with the added benefit of saving wear and tear on your air conditioning system by running it less frequently. "Heat gain" is a technical term for any environmental factor that increases your home's cooling load, creating a larger gap between indoor temperatures and the desired level of comfort.
Window treatments are very effective at reducing heat gain, and can be used both outside and inside your home. For your home's exterior, consider mesh window screens and high-reflectivity films.
- Mesh screens are placed in window frames and cover the entire window, providing effective diffusion of incoming solar heat and radiation.
- High-reflectivity window films are even more effective, particularly because we have a long cooling season here in the Conejo Valley. While the films provide year-round protection, they do have some disadvantages; they limit visibility through windows and require regular cleaning.
- As a third option, particularly for smaller windows, you can also install shutters to give your home a classic look and boosted curb appeal.
Indoors, you can use drapes, shades and blinds to ward off heat penetrating from the outdoors. These are particularly effective over large windows that get a lot of sun exposure. For maximum effectiveness, choose interior window dressings that have a reflective white surface facing the window. This will ensure that the greatest possible amount of sunlight is reflected out of your home.
Additional strategies for reducing heat gain include limiting the use of interior lighting and avoiding using heat-generating appliances such as your stove and dishwasher during the day. Window treatments, used in tandem with a few simple lifestyle adjustments, can dramatically reduce your cooling load and lead to significant energy and cost savings. Finally, consider the benefits of awnings, overhangs and trees; the shade they produce is also very effective at reducing heat gain in the summer.
