Attic Insulation: For Home Comfort Downstairs, Boost What You Have Upstairs

In order to maximize your comfort -- and energy savings -- it's important to make sure your home is properly sealed, which in part means making sure your attic insulation is up to par. Even if you have the highest-efficiency home-comfort system money can buy to help deal with the warm summers in the Ventura and Santa Barbara County areas, without proper attic insulation, you'll run the risk of higher energy bills, lower home comfort and decreased system life span.

But an efficient, insulated attic will help your air conditioner to work smarter and more efficiently, so you can enjoy a comfortable home environment.

What goes on in the attic has a direct effect on how your downstairs rooms will feel. In the summer, when you are trying to cool down your home, an attic can become very warm due to the sun’s heat transfer into the space. Then your air conditioner or heat pump must work hard to cool the air, as this overhead heat adds to your home's cooling load, which will ultimately increase your cooling bill. Just as importantly, all this hard work will reduce the lifetime of your home-comfort system, no matter how highly rated it is in terms of efficiency.

Attic insulation will prevent unnecessary heat gain in the attic, as insulation is designed to "resist" the movement of heat. When your attic has proper amounts of and efficient insulation, it can work to effectively stop heat movement into the space, which will ultimately result in a cooler home and lower energy bills.

Attic insulation can come in several forms, and its R-value will tell you how effective it is at keeping out heat. It's best to work with a professional in order to maximize your investment in attic insulation and make improvements that will get you the results that you're looking for.
